Ruby Learning
December 11th, 2007 -
Have you been interested in learning Ruby, but haven’t found the best resource to do so, or are not sure where to start? Well, a friend of mine, Satish Talim, asked me to announce his third class, Learning Ruby Programming.
This course is instructed by Satish, for free! it’s open to anyone and begins January 7th, 2008. The syllabus is available online and in several languages.
To sign up and join this class (last class had over 500 students), head on over and register. This is a great opportunity to learn Ruby, with an excellent and knowledgeable instructor, all for free.

@Matt, I believe it follows a time schedule, but Satish has a lot of the resources already on the site for people to read and learn from. Also, Pragmatic Programmers have a book coming out soon, Programming Ruby (often called the pickaxe book) that covers Ruby 1.9 – which should be out this month.
I’d look into getting that book to compliment the course.

@Robert, Thanks for the info. I’ve read part of the old version of the pickaxe (the one published freely on the web), but everyone seems to think that the newer version is better. I’m sure this latest version will be even better yet. I may have to check it out some time.
I always had trouble learning Object Oriented programming for some reason. I guess it is because the only real training I’ve ever received was in COBOL which is very far removed for OO programming.
Take care.

@Matt: I’ve always found that thinking of OOP like objects we see in real life helped make sense of the ideology behind OOP. Check out this site: http://pine.fm/LearnToProgram/

This class looks interesting. I’m very tempted to sign up, I just don’t have the time right now as I’m busy studying for some security certifications. Not to mention that programming is not a job requirement for me…just something I’m interested in learning more about.
I noticed the class starts on January 7th. Do you know if the course follows a rigid time schedule or can anyone take the classes as time permits?
Thanks for sharing the link.
